Pathological Gambling is a progressive disorder characterized by a continuous or periodic loss
of control over gambling and with obtaining money with which to gamble; irrational thinking; and a
continuation of the behavior despite adverse consequences. (Richard Rosenthal) It is recognized in the
DSM IV as an impulse control disorder and can be diagnosed by a trained therapist.
Compulsive Gambling is also defined as an impulse control disorder in which the gambler is driven
by an overwhelming uncontrollable urge to gamble. Gambling takes up most of the gamblers time,
money and energy. It can destroy everything meaningful in the person’s life.
When gambling takes over someone’s life they can find themselves with serious family, financial,
employment and legal problems. The focus of our program is to help an individual find ways to
alleviate the problem and put the family back together.
